Porcelain Veneers

Transform your smile in just a few weeks

Dental teeth veneers are ceramic shells that are placed over the teeth to give it protection as well as to improve its appearance. Mainly used in cosmetic dentistry, they are typically called porcelain veneers because of the material used.

Porcelain is one of the most common materials used in making veneers and porcelain crowns because they provide the necessary strength and resilience to the tooth structure, and their colour is also very similar to that of the tooth enamel.

Porcelain veneers can help with a range of cosmetic dental issues, such as providing support to weakened teeth, hiding stains or chipped teeth, improve your bite and gives patients the chance to have their dream smile.

Dental Veneer

A dental veneer can not only be used for cosmetic dentistry, they are also used to treat other dental conditions. This includes fractured teeth, crooked teeth, misaligned teeth or uneven teeth, larger gaps between your teeth, discoloured teeth, congenitally malformed teeth and teeth affected by malnutrition.

Dental veneers can be used to cover and strengthen teeth imperfections.

Veneers also require less tooth removal than crowns. This means veneers are less invasive than crowns and result in a lower risk of tooth sensitivity.

Dental Porcelain Veneer

There are two main materials for dental veneers, porcelain vs composite resin.

Porcelain veneers are thin yet bonded hard objects. Porcelain veneers will not feel like you are wearing something – nor will it be visible to others. Composite resin have a texture similar to hard plastic and are also bonded on.

However, veneers made from porcelain last longer, look better and cost more. This cost reflects the craftmanship and material quality only a porcelain can give.

At Maylands Dental Centre, our dentists are familiar with digital smile design, trained in veneers (porcelain and resin) courses from both Western Australia and worldwide and have an appreciation of what makes a smile aesthetic and unique to a person's appearance.

It is important to consult with a dentist familiar with the intricacies of porcelain and veneer design as once the teeth have been cut away, a 'fix up' job can be more complicated.

Composite Resin Veneers or Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are coatings attached to the surface of the teeth to aesthetically restore the smile. Composite veneers are made from an inexpensive, high-quality composite material that closely resembles natural teeth.

Composite veneers can be completed same-day and are pain free and easy to repair if damaged. This means that you will not need any temporary veneers and can get your new smile straight away.

Because composite resin veneers can stain and dull over time, such dental veneers require periodic polishing and replacement over time. Still, composite veneers cost less than a porcelain veneer in the short term and are thus still favoured by some of our patients.

Some patients are more suited to certain veneers and our dentists can help guide you to make an informed decision about the best veneers for your teeth.

Porcelain Veneers Appointment

Our porcelain dental veneers are hand crafted at a dental laboratory with a very specific prescription, tailored to your lip anatomy, facial structure, ideal smile and dental bite.

This usually requires two appointments. This does not mean two visits per tooth.

The first visit involves a consultation with our dentist where we discuss your ideal smile, your current tooth shade and shape, treatment cost, whether anything needs to be shaved or added to the front surface of your tooth, the material type (porcelain vs composite resin), the changes required per tooth and how to achieve this; along with any other concerns you may have. Once comfortable, we can then move on to the second visit whereby treatment can then begin.

Sometimes, patients are still unsure about the type of veneers they want and can bring their partner/friend for a second opinion appointment to discuss their new look.

At Maylands Dental Centre, we welcome this as we pride ourselves in designing a lasting smile that YOU will love for years to come. We also have the option of sending a trial teeth design to the lab and this allows you to try the shape of the veneers prior to us making them permanent. However, there is an extra cost with this and still requires digital impressions.

Once the design is finalised, the teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers, impressions taken, veneers designed, processed and then glued in. It is important to have the cementation (gluing) process done correctly as excess cement can lead to gum disease, staining and irritation.
