Dental Crowns To Support And Restore Natural Teeth
A dental crown or cap is a covering that is commonly placed on top of a badly cracked tooth, a missing tooth, large fillings, a decayed tooth or any fractured teeth, to help restore its original shape and size. It can also be placed on any of your front teeth to change its size, shape or colour to renew your smile.
Dental crowns protect and strengthen the existing tooth structure. They are especially great in teeth that cannot be restored via other types of restorations and looks just like a natural tooth.
Dental crowns are also used to help restore dental implants. In missing teeth, once the screw/dental implant is placed, the dental crown is then screwed on top of the implant.
Types of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are separated into the types of materials they are made of - metal vs porcelain.
The most common type of dental crown are porcelain crowns. Other dental crown options may also be suggested depending on your individual requirements. These include but aren't limited to gold crowns, metal crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns, Zirconia crowns, Cerec crowns and ceramic crowns.
Regardless of the material, the key to your dental crown lasting requires your dentist to ensure the bite and fit is correct along with great oral health maintenance by yourself.
Dental Crown Procedure
A crown procedure usually requires several appointments. At your first appointment, your dental professional will take x-rays and moulds of the tooth whilst preparing the tooth to receive the dental crown. A temporary crown is then placed at this appointment whilst the mould is sent to the laboratory to be hand crafted.
Your permanent crown is made by advanced dental technicians in a dental laboratory to a very specific prescription by our dentist that takes into account many factors. These many factors include your underlying tooth color, the ideal contour and shade for the tooth, your bite and the positioning of the neighbouring teeth.
At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and replaced by your dentist with your new crown. This final crown will cover the entire tooth, providing support and helping to repair your smile. After this you'll be given post-care instructions for advice on good oral hygiene and advised to have regular dental checkups with your dentist.
In some cases, gum surgery may be required for dental crowns. Please note any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek the opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner first or seek a second opinion to discuss your medical history and any previous medical conditions.
The Australian dental association strongly urges Australians to have their dental surgery in Australia, as the benefits far outweigh the risks.
