Tips for teething in babies

  • Teething is not fun for anyone but here are some tips to hopefully help your little one manage things better.
  • There is no perfect formula to help and sometimes trial and error is needed to get a result that works best
  • First thing to try is to distract them from the pain. Lots of affection and attention with plenty of cuddles can help keep their mind off their mouth for short relief
  • Some light pressure with something cold can help relieve sore gums. Gently rubbing or massaging the gums with clean finger or cold cloth (NOT TOO HARD OR TOO COLD)
  • Teething rings that are chilled (not frozen) can offer temporary relief through pressure and cold
  • If tot prefers (cooled) dummy than that is ok
  • Little ones that are on solids can use sugar-free rusks or peeled cucumber to help soothe tender areas
  • DO NOT add sugar, honey or jam to the tip of a baby bottle or dummy
  • DO NOT add medicines to your child’s food or bottle
  • AVOID the use of Amber necklaces and bracelets as they pose a choking risk and have no scientifically proven therapeutical benefit
  • If all techniques and measures fail give Maylands Dental Centre a call before using any pain medication or oral gels containing local anaesthetic
  • If fever persists please see a Doctor
