The first step in in-chair teeth whitening is to assess your dental health. If we determine that you are a good candidate for teeth whitening, we will get to work preparing your mouth for the cosmetic procedure. As a precaution, we will use a lip retractor to keep your mouth open wide, gauze to keep your mouth dry, and we will place a rubber dam to protect sensitive gum tissue from hydrogen peroxide.

Our whitening gel will then be applied to your teeth, and we will activate it with a light to produce immediate results. It takes about 20 minutes for the light to convert the oxygen in the gel into a form that can penetrate deep into your tooth enamel to remove stains. Depending on the shade you desire and the colour of your teeth, we will most likely need to apply several layers. 

In order to maintain long-term results, we recommend a take-home whitening kit or have in-office whitening every six months.

You may temporarily experience sensitive teeth after a teeth whitening treatment due to the active ingredient in the whitening gel. Hydrogen peroxide is responsible for removing stains from teeth. Sensitive teeth can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and by avoiding hot or cold foods and drinks.

The whitening gel may cause an irritating chemical burn if it comes into contact with gum tissue. Fortunately, professional treatment by an experienced dentist can significantly minimise or eliminate accidental gum contact with the gel.
