FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implants can replace all or most of your teeth, giving you a healthy, dazzling new smile. Whether you’re tired of wearing dentures or you’ve recently discovered the reality of extensive tooth loss, you should consider whether dental implants are right for you. But should you choose traditional dentures or All-on-X? These two options may appear identical at first, but there are several key differences to be aware of. Consider these key points when comparing All-on-Xs to traditional dentures.

Durability

Dentures are frequently held in the mouth using adhesive, making them prone to slipping and rocking, especially when eating and speaking. Furthermore, traditional dentures do not provide wearers with the same degree of bite force or chewing ability as All-on-X dental implants do.

All-on-X implants, on the other hand, provide biting capabilities similar to those of chewing food with natural teeth. Patients can once again enjoy all of their favorite foods without worrying about their replacement teeth falling out of place or causing embarrassment.

Bone mass preservation

While the construction of traditional dentures has significantly advanced over the years, they continue to have limits. Since traditional dentures are removable, they are not as stable as full-arch appliances anchored to dental implants. Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jaw. By serving as a foundation or anchor, these titanium posts help to support prosthetic teeth.

Using the All-on-X method, the dental team will strategically place four dental implants within the lower or upper arch, supporting an entire set of teeth.  All-on-X implants eliminate the movement of replacement teeth and contribute to preserving healthy bone mass by promoting and preventing jawbone shrinkage. This benefit also allows a patient to enjoy the smooth oral function and retain the shape of their jawline. Additionally, since implants are sturdy and durable, patients typically feel more confident in their replacement teeth and appearance.

With regular care and good oral hygiene habits, the prosthesis attached to all-on-x implants usually lasts at least 15 to 20 years. When the prosthesis needs to be replaced, a trained dentist can do it without disturbing the implants in the jaw.

An all-on-x implant procedure involves the insertion of four titanium fixtures into your upper or lower jawbone. This procedure is a more stable option for removable partials. Removable dentures might make it difficult to speak or eat. With permanent teeth, you have more freedom and comfort when engaging in such activities. If you want to know how an all-on-x procedure can replace your partials, here’s what to expect during surgery:

Consultation and Examination

The first step in receiving all-on-four implants is to schedule an appointment with an implant dentist so they may evaluate your case. During a dental implant consultation, you should expect a thorough examination of your mouth, as well as dental x-rays and possibly a CBCT scan. The visual inspection allows your implant dentist to check the state of your gums and any remaining teeth, whereas the dental x-rays and CBCT scan allow for a look at the bone and other underlying tissues. Your implant dentist will also go over your medical history, current medications, and any current health issues to see if you are a good candidate for oral surgery.

Your dentist will give you a treatment plan near the end of your session. If you decide to proceed with treatment, your implant placement operation will be arranged at a later date. In some situations, a pre-operation appointment may be made to discuss dental sedation, how to prepare, and any medications required.

Implant Placement

You should arrive at the office dressed comfortably on the day of your appointment. You will also need to ensure that you have a driver to take you home following the surgery because you will be unable to drive due to the sedation. Your implant dentist will prepare you for the surgical procedure by giving dental sedation.

After you’ve been anaesthetised, your dentist will begin extracting any remaining teeth. Then, they will create a small incision in your gums to gain access to your jawbone and mould the socket where the implants will be put. The implant screw will then be inserted into the jawbone, and the abutment, or connector, will be attached. In some situations, your dentist may also perform a bone transplant, which involves the placement of bone material surrounding the implant.

Finally, the gums will be sutured up around the abutment so that it is visible above the gum line. Four dental implants will be inserted in the top arch, and four more will be placed in the lower arch. These implants will be used to support a temporary denture while the implant sites recover.

Recovery

After your dental implants have been placed, the final step is to allow them to heal properly. You may suffer minimal discomfort and edema immediately following your operation. The majority of patients suffer minimal postoperative discomfort, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

To be effective, your dental implants must go through a 3-6 month process called osseointegration, in which new bone growth surrounding the implant bonds it in place. To allow this to happen, your dentist will put you on a brief soft foods diet to avoid putting too much strain on your freshly placed implants. When you apply too much stress to your implants too soon, they can become loose or healing gets delayed. Only after osseointegration may your dental specialists begin treatment on your permanent dentures.

Dental implant procedures have a high success rate lasting for the long term.  However, problems can happen in rare situations, causing an implant to fail. Keep an eye out for the following most common all-on-x dental implant treatment issues:

  • Loose implant:
The most common complication is a loose implant. This could be due to several factors. In rare circumstances, the jaw bone is too weak to hold the implant, maybe due to aging. Smoking, advanced gum disease, and poor oral hygiene can also cause a loose implant. If your implant is loose, see an oral surgeon right away.

  • Infection:
Infection is a common oral implant problem. Inflammation and infection at the implant site might cause discomfort and fever. Infections commonly arise quickly after implant surgery. Follow your dentist’s post-op cleaning instructions and call us if you see any signs of infection.

  • Bleeding:
An implant may cause chronic bleeding. Non-stop bleeding can cause everything from stomach distress to anemia. Your dentist can usually halt the bleeding while keeping the implant in place.

  • Micro-movement:
Implants can micro-move, or shift slightly. Like a loose implant, this is minor and may go unrecognised. Tightness in the teeth around the implant, or a shift in the implant which is visible in the mirror, are indicators of a micro-movement. This is a symptom that the implant is about to come loose. If you suspect a problem, see your dental professional.

  • Allergy reaction:
Most implants are titanium. Rarely, a patient may have an allergy to titanium screw or another metal. An allergic reaction causes a change in taste, tingling, inflammation, and swelling. If you are allergic to titanium alloy, there are other materials available. Simply replace your implant. Contact your dentist if you suspect an adverse response to your implant.

  • Nerve damage:
An implant too close to a nerve can cause injury. Tingling in the tongue, gums, lips, and face is a sign of nerve injury. Removing the implant may help, but the nerve damage may be permanent. Your dentist should inform you of all potential dangers, including nerve injury.

  • Protrusion into the sinus cavity:
Occasionally, an upper jaw implant may extend into the sinus cavity. This can lead to sinus irritation and other issues, as well as an increased risk of implant failure.

The straightforward answer is yes. Individuals who have experienced significant bone loss may be candidates for the all-on-x implant procedure. This can frequently be performed without the need for extensive bone graft procedures. Before prescribing a dental implant solution, a skilled dentist considers various factors. Several of these factors include the number of missing teeth, the source of the patient’s bone loss, the amount of bone loss, and the jaw area.

If you lack sufficient jawbone to support an implant, bone grafting might be used to supplement the bone. This surgery entails extracting bone from non-essential regions of the body and grafting it to your jaw bone in order to create enough volume for an implant. Bone is most often taken from another part of the mouth, and it generally takes a minimum of about three months to fuse with the existing bone and become strong enough to support an implant.

Dental implants are a multi-step process that requires patience. In some cases, if a sufficient healthy jawbone is present, a dental implant can be placed on the same day as a tooth is extracted. However, a dentist will typically recommend waiting three to six months following a tooth extraction to allow the area to properly heal before doing an invasive procedure.
